What a Planned Home Birth Looks Like
Prenatal Care
Prenatal visits give us time to get to know each other and prepare thoughtfully for birth at home. Our team monitors the health and growth of mother and baby, provides routine prenatal testing, bloodwork, genetic screening and ultrasounds as indicated, and spends time discussing birth preferences and preparing for labor.
Labor & Birth at Home
When labor begins, our team comes to you with the equipment, medications, and supplies needed for birth. We carefully monitor mother and baby while supporting movement, water, comfort measures, and freedom to labor and give birth in the position that feels most natural. Our approach is calm and unobtrusive, protecting physiologic birth while remaining attentive to safety throughout labor.
After Your Baby Arrives
Our care continues after birth. We stay while mother and baby rest, bond, and begin feeding, supporting skin-to-skin bonding after birth while providing ongoing assessment, a complete newborn exam, and breastfeeding support. We return for a postpartum home visit and remain in close contact in the days and weeks that follow, with 24/7 availability for urgent concerns.

Schedule a ConsultationIf Plans Change
Most planned home births remain at home the whole time. Skilled home birth care also means recognizing the uncommon occasions when mother or baby would be better served in a hospital. If a transfer is needed, our hospital affiliation allows our team to remain involved and help make the transition as seamless and supported as possible.
Home Birth or Birth Center on Long Island?
Both settings offer midwife-led, low-intervention care for healthy pregnancies. The main difference is where you feel most at ease during labor.

| Where you labor | Your own home | A private suite in Hewlett |
| Travel in labor | None | A drive to the center once labor is active |
| Water birth | With a rented or purchased birth pool | Birth pools already in the suites |
| Your care team | Our midwives | Our midwives |
| After the birth | Rest in your own bed | Recover in the suite, then go home |

Home Birth Questions Long Island Families Ask
Do our midwives attend home births on Long Island?
Yes. Our midwives attend planned home births for families in Nassau County. Call us with your address and due date and we will confirm whether you are within our service area.
Is home birth safe?
For healthy women with normal pregnancies, home birth with experienced midwives can be a safe and beautiful option. Our team carefully screens for home birth, provides ongoing prenatal care, and monitors mother and baby appropriately throughout labor and birth. If a higher level of care becomes beneficial, our hospital affiliation allows for a smooth transition while keeping care connected.
What happens if I need to go to the hospital during labor?
If plans change during labor, our team helps make the transition to the hospital as smooth and seamless as possible. Because we are affiliated with a hospital, care can remain connected, and our team can continue to support you through the transition and your birth.
Can I have a water birth at home?
Yes. Water birth is available at home. A birth pool can be set up in your home, allowing warm water to provide comfort, freedom of movement, and a peaceful environment throughout labor, with the option to welcome your baby in the water.
Can I switch from a home birth to your Hewlett birth center?
Yes. The same midwives care for families at home and at our birth center, so changing your plan does not mean changing your care team. Some families switch during pregnancy, and some decide closer to their due date.
Does insurance cover home birth?
It depends on your plan. We work with many insurance plans, including Medicaid. Call us with your insurance details and we will check your eligibility with you.
