Birthing Center Long Island

Comprehensive Pediatric Care for Newborns and Children

Care does not end when your baby is born. At Birthing Center Long Island, our pediatric services support families through the newborn weeks and the years that follow, with unhurried visits at our office on Broadway in Hewlett. You will have time to ask questions, and your child will be seen by providers who already know your family’s story.

Newborn and Infant Checkups

Most families come in for a first newborn visit within the first week after birth. Our newborn and infant checkups are an opportunity for you to ask questions about your baby’s health, development, growth, nutrition, and milestones. We want you to feel heard and listened to. During these visits, we assess weight, height, head circumference, and developmental progress to ensure your baby is thriving. Our team offers guidance on feeding, sleep patterns, and soothing techniques while addressing any concerns you may have. These checkups also provide an opportunity to build a foundation of trust and communication between your family and our healthcare providers. If you are still pregnant, these visits are planned alongside your midwifery care so the transition after birth is already arranged.

Developmental Screenings

Our developmental screenings are designed to track your child’s progress in areas such as motor skills, communication, social interaction, and problem-solving. By identifying potential delays early, we can recommend interventions and resources to support healthy development. If a screening raises a question, we will explain what we saw, what it may mean, and what the next step looks like, including a referral when a specialist is the right fit.

Feeding and Nutrition Guidance

We believe nutrition plays a vital role in a child’s physical and cognitive development. Our team offers personalized guidance to help parents create balanced, nutrient-rich meal plans tailored to their child’s age, dietary needs, and preferences. Whether you are working through breastfeeding challenges, introducing solids, or dealing with a suddenly picky toddler, we will talk through what is normal, what is worth watching, and what to try next.

Care for Common Childhood Illnesses

Alongside routine visits, we see children for the everyday illnesses that come with early childhood: fevers, coughs and colds, ear pain, rashes, and stomach upset. We will tell you plainly when something can be watched at home and when it needs to be seen.

What to Expect at Your Child's First Visit

First visits are unhurried. We start by going over your pregnancy and birth, then check your baby’s weight, length, head circumference, feeding, and sleep. You will have time to ask everything on your list, including the questions that feel too small to ask.

If you would rather talk before booking, you can schedule a consultation, and we will walk you through how care works.

Our team works closely with families through the first years, when questions come up constantly and small things feel large. If you are deciding where your child will be seen, we are glad to answer questions before you commit to anything.

Not sure yet? Call us and ask. There is no obligation to book.

Parent Education and Everyday Support

Raising a child comes with unique challenges, and we’re here to support you every step of the way. Our parent education services include consultations, workshops, and resources on topics such as infant safety, sleep training, developmental milestones, and effective parenting techniques. Many of these topics are also covered in more depth in our childbirth education classes, and families who want continued hands-on help at home often add postpartum doula support.
